Music is one of the biggest and most important elements of a successful reception and careful planning and preparation must be undertaken to ensure that it delights and entertains all your guests. Our tips and advice cover booking DJ's, bands and ceilidhs (a good old Scottish knees up dance for those from hail from anywhere other than Scotland!!) but could be applied to all forms of entertainment.
Your wedding will most likely require music to satisfy all ages and musical tastes so ask about variety and the policy on requests.
Find out about equipment. A DJ should have professional sound equipment - not "home consumer" gear.
If lighting is important to you, ask about special effects.
A good DJ will take the time to explain how they will handle the details of the introductions, first dance, toast, blessing, cake cutting, bouquet and special requested dances.
They should be able to communicate well with you and should be willing to listen to your ideas and meet any special needs.
Your DJ should be familiar with most of the music you want and should know how to organize the reception within your guidelines.
Try to determine if your DJ has the ability and willingness to "read" and motivate the crowd.
Most reputable DJ's will provide you with song lists and an informational planning sheet.
Does he/she have the “special” songs that you want played?
Will he/she buy music for you or will you supply him/her with the sound tracks?
When dealing with large companies meet with the DJ that will be performing at your reception.
Ask if there is videotape of your DJ at a wedding that you can see.
Ask if there are any references or thank you cards that you can see.
Ask your DJ if he performs at a bar/nightclub so that you can see him in action
Check your dance floor is large enough for the number of guests.
If a Ceilidh is planned check the shape of the dance floor, square or rectangle is best.
Check the surface of the dance floor is suitable and not dangerously slippy/adjacent to steps etc.
If a Band and a DJ are hired check there is enough suitable space for both sets of equipment, and ensure there are enough electric sockets, chairs etc
Discuss with band and DJ to decide on a planned timetable for the evening, but be prepared to be flexible.
Check with the Ceilidh band to see if they have a 'caller' who will help talk people through unfamiliar dances.
